PLANT TREES, SAVE NATURE
July 28 is observed as ‘World Nature Conservation Day’. Nature. A word that we all can resonate with. Yet, only a few of us really give a thought to it. Nature. If we feel it, it has the power to heal us. Nature. It is what a lot of people look to capture those picturesque shots for Instagram. Nature. It is also referred to as mother but we seldom treat it like one. Nature. Human activities have meddled with it and it is unleashing its fury. Nature. If we do our bit towards it, it will reward us.
This year’s World Nature Conservation Day happens to be on a Sunday. Weekends are loved by most people because it gives them a break from their work or studies. But for We Mean To Clean (WMTC) volunteers, the excitement is for a slightly different reason. WMTC volunteers are always excited to do their bit for the environment on weekends. These volunteers truly appreciate all that mother nature has endowed upon us.
It is human nature to feel blessed upon receiving gifts and conserve those special memories. WMTC volunteers attempt to do the same with their monsoon plantations and maintenance activities that follow post monsoons. Thus, we met at an MCD park in Sarvapriya Vihar, Hauz Khas today to plant native trees.
We began by briefing our new volunteers on the significance of native trees. Yes, trees such amaltas, pilkhan, neem, peepal etc. that are native to Delhi or to India. They are vital to our local ecology. They are not only adapted to the local conditions but other life forms also depend upon them. Thus, they help conserve the very nature on which we depend!
The other dimension to nature is the one that’s our own. Yes, human nature. We as individuals. One of the aspects is our attitude towards garbage. We just litter around without giving a thought to the consequences. But someone has to undo somewhere.
In an attempt to do the same, our volunteers began by cleaning the park that was littered with trash ranging from stray bottle caps, plastic bottles, empty tetrapacks to tobacco pouches etc. We collected a whopping 25 kg of this garbage! Kudos to the volunteers who helped prevent the soil being contaminated from this trash. Nature conservation!
We all must understand that simply passing on the buck for the sake of policies, votes and governance has rendered us a tag of being one of the most polluted cities and a filthy one too! Please help us with conservation activities that we do on a regular basis. We can do one in or around an area of your preference as well.
Please ensure you are using fuel, water and power efficiently wherever you use it. Please avoid the use of single use plastic bags. Please do not litter. Appreciate mother nature and monitor yourself!
We need everyone to do their bit. Join us and help us in our mission!
