Yes, covid19 has certainly curtailed our activities but it has failed to decimate the spirit of our volunteers. We encouraged our volunteers to do individual-level cleanups. Even a small spot was good. And that too only if they were comfortable doing so. Some responded well to the call of a covid-safe cleanup drive. So, we had volunteers doing their bit spread across geographies. Few cleanup up in Hauz Khas, Delhi. Few were in Jaipur so they cleaned up there. And there were a few in Janak Puri, Delhi, who not only cleaned up but also planted native trees after the cleanup. Our volunteers planted 60+ native tree saplings such as pilkhan, jamun and amaltas in a park. As always, we will not forget them after the plantation. EVERY BIT COUNTS! Actions add up or intensify over time and we can achieve big results from small daily steps. And one such step being taken by our volunteers is regular watering of the native tree saplings planted by us. The volunteers comprised of school and college students as well as working professionals carrying watering containers ranging from two litres water bottles to 200L water tank. There was scarcity of water but the passion of our high-spirited volunteers could not deter them from helping our green friends. The capital city is now in a public health emergency as the situation called for an emergency action. Action. We citizens too need to take some action. Something that solves the problem at the root level. One of them is planting native trees. Our volunteers have been planting native trees such as peepal, neem, amaltas, pilkhan, marodphali etc. The best part? Our volunteers also water them regularly! Not all seedlings can take root and a 100% survival rate is not attainable. It needs regular watering, weeding and monitoring to prevent damage or decay. It needs protection from animals, pests and vandals. Most importantly, it needs human neighbours allowing it to take root. Our volunteers understand the struggle of a growing sapling and hence, like every weekend, went to nurture our existing saplings at Hauz Khas and Sangam Vihar.
