2018 Monsoon Plantation - Week 04

🌳 100 AMALTAS SAPLINGS PLANTED!!!

🌳 We are pleased to share that with the help of around 50+ volunteers - including kids from the nearby areas, college students and working adults - we have hit yet another century today.

🌳 We planted 100 amaltas saplings within a matter of two hours, although there was some interruption due to rains.

🌳 We have focused only on amaltas in this park because this area is frequented by goats. Goats don't feed on amaltas.

🌳 We could have planted more saplings but we were out of the scope of pits here. Our volunteers will visit the park mid-week and try to seek the DDA's assistance in removing weeds. Post that we'll see if we can plant any more saplings here.

🌳 Our total saplings count this monsoon season has hit 500! Yes, if you've been following our page, we had planted total 370 till last week, today's 100 and there's another set of ~30 saplings reported by other set of volunteers that they planted.

What happens when many hands come together?

An exciting day for us. We never tried it before at this scale at such a location. But with a little help from everyone the day turned out to be outstanding! The place is Janakpuri District Center. It's a large shopping center in west Delhi. Home to various kinds of shops, eateries, restaurants and even offices. Also, a perpetual victim of civil negligence by those who have an establishment here or the visitors to these establishments. Yes, the place maintains consistency all-year round in terms of open garbage dumping. Before we even conducted this drive we spoke to a lot of shop owners to understand the problem. It was the same lamenting around people's attitude towards littering liberally... Forget littering, people found creative ways to dump their garbage - office letter boxes! RAINFALL DEFICIT? PLANT TREES! The monsoons finally arrived in Delhi this week after a long delay… so much so that a joke was doing rounds that clouds had gone to the UK to watch the Cricket World Cup! And for two days the clouds showered us with their generosity. But alas, the subsequent days were dry. A news article quoted government officials stating the dry spell may continue for a while. Contrastingly, there are some parts of India that are drowned in floods. Does any of this tell us something? Well, for starters, there sure is an ecological imbalance.
