Alarm Bells for Humanity Keep Ringing

A recent study published in the journal Nature Climate Change has revealed alarming predictions about the Earth's future. Despite countries' efforts to meet their current emissions targets, the study shows that the world is still on track to warm by 2.7 degrees Celsius. This projected temperature rise would far surpass the 1.5 degrees Celsius target set by scientists as the threshold to avoid the most severe consequences of climate change.

The implications of exceeding the 1.5 degrees Celsius target are significant. Scientists warn that crossing this threshold could lead to catastrophic impacts on our planet. In order to prevent such a scenario, the study's authors emphasize the urgent need to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% before 2050. This ambitious goal requires immediate action and a comprehensive approach to combat climate change.

The study's findings underscore the urgency and importance of taking immediate action to mitigate the impacts of climate change. If the current trajectory continues, the consequences of global warming will be dire. Extreme weather events such as hurricanes, heatwaves, and droughts will become more frequent and severe. Rising sea levels will threaten coastal communities, and water scarcity will worsen, affecting agriculture and human settlements. Furthermore, the ecological balance will be disrupted, causing harm to ecosystems and biodiversity.

The imbalance has already shown profound impact on India, and cities like Delhi are particularly vulnerable to its impacts. We are already witnessing the wrath, for example:

  • Extreme Heat: One of the most significant consequences of climate change in Delhi is the intensification of heatwaves. Rising temperatures, coupled with urbanization and the heat island effect, exacerbate heat-related illnesses and fatalities. Heatwaves have severe implications for public health, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and the poor.
  • Air Pollution: Delhi already faces significant air pollution challenges, and climate change further complicates the issue. Rising temperatures and changing weather patterns can contribute to the formation of stagnant air masses, trapping pollutants and exacerbating smog episodes. Climate change also influences the regional climate, which can impact the sources and transport of air pollutants.
  • Water Scarcity: Climate change affects the availability and distribution of water resources, posing challenges for cities like Delhi, which are already grappling with water scarcity issues. Changing precipitation patterns and melting Himalayan glaciers, which are a vital source of freshwater, can result in water shortages and increased competition for water resources.

Addressing these challenges necessitates national as well as international cooperation and collective efforts. The study stresses the need for nations to come together and work towards common goals in combating climate change. It is crucial for governments, organizations, and individuals to collaborate and implement effective strategies to reduce emissions, promote sustainable practices, and protect the environment. Only through united and coordinated efforts can we hope to preserve the planet for future generations.

While global action is essential, individuals can also contribute to the fight against climate change in their daily lives. By adopting responsible practices, we can make a positive impact on the environment. A few tips:

  • Walk short distances instead of taking a vehicle
  • Maximise the use of public transport
  • Use highest possible energy efficiency rated electrical appliances
  • Switch off electrical appliances when not in use
  • Maximize natural ventilation and lighting at home
  • Plant native trees with us!

In conclusion, the study's alarming findings serve as a wake-up call for humanity. To avoid catastrophic levels of global warming, rapid and substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are necessary. International cooperation, collective efforts, and individual actions are all crucial components in the fight against climate change. By taking immediate action and adopting sustainable practices, we can strive to protect our planet and ensure a better future for all living beings.

WE MEAN TO CLEAN's Recommendations to Achieve a Swachh Bharat - I

India is one big nation. We are rich in cultural heritage. Over century we’ve developed, economically, especially the middle class. About 43% of population resides in urban areas, which were 11.4% according to 1901 census, 28.53% in the 2001 census and crossed 30% as per 2011 census, standing at 31.16%. There are 53 urban agglomerations in India with a population of 1 million or more as of 2011 against 35 in 2001. Our transcendence can be termed as “a consumerist culture”, where virtually every item purchased comes fixed in a box wrapped in a bubble sheet. In science, this fact reduces time of impact and absorbs the momentum after collision but in reality it is aggregating to an irreparable damage to environment. It is waste generation.  India generates 62 million tonnes out of which 43 million Tonnes Per Annum is collected from source. Read below: 5.6 million tonnes is plastic waste 0.17 million tonnes is biomedical waste, 15 lakh tonne is e-waste 7.90 million ...

What happens when many hands come together?

An exciting day for us. We never tried it before at this scale at such a location. But with a little help from everyone the day turned out to be outstanding! The place is Janakpuri District Center. It's a large shopping center in west Delhi. Home to various kinds of shops, eateries, restaurants and even offices. Also, a perpetual victim of civil negligence by those who have an establishment here or the visitors to these establishments. Yes, the place maintains consistency all-year round in terms of open garbage dumping. Before we even conducted this drive we spoke to a lot of shop owners to understand the problem. It was the same lamenting around people's attitude towards littering liberally... Forget littering, people found creative ways to dump their garbage - office letter boxes! The other thing that came out of those discussions with the local shopkeepers was finger-pointing on civic authorities. Not that the place doesn't see any sweepers. We did spot one on the day of...

Watering and Maintenance of Native Tree Saplings

BUILDING GREEN MACHINES! A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success. - Elbert Hubbard Are you in Delhi NCR? The rising AQI levels bothering you? Well, the worsening air quality in Delhi has entered the poor category with the only consolation being that pollution is not as bad as that of previous years. Yes, you read it right... It’s better than previous years! Doesn’t this act as a ray of hope? A hope for a breathable Delhi! And this hope is something which motivates our volunteers to keep working towards the solution - building and raising natural carbon sinks in the capital. With the same mission, our volunteers went to nurture these carbon sinks - our saplings at Hauz Khas, Sainik Vihar and Sangam Vihar. If you are a regular follower of our page you would know we have many native tree saplings in these locations - few of them being amaltas, mehendi, neem, amla, pilkhan, hibiscus. Ou...
