WE MEAN TO CLEAN: 4th Anniversary

OUR FOURTH ANNIVERSARY!

We turned FOUR this October 2! Quite an extraordinary feat for us - a group of ordinary citizens trying to do their bit for the betterment of Delhi's environment.

We celebrated the day in our usual style - by conducting a cleanliness drive. We have been working quite actively in Rani Bagh for the past two years. We have planted various native trees on a median (road divider) here.

Government agencies clean public places such as parks, roads etc. but medians are ignored for some reason. Further, this median is a victim of brutal levels of local garbage dumping.

So we decided to clean this place to ensure a healthy environment for our saplings, so that they ensure a healthy environment for us.

We also engaged locals around, who were very cooperative in assisting us during the drive not only with actual work but also with kindness to treat all of us with refreshments.

We began by tying some banners pin the median grill. These banners have quotes that on garbage dumping and plantation.

Then our team quickly sprung into the main action - we cleared about 15 large sacks of garbage from this median. The stretch isn't even a kilometre!

We nourished our saplings with home-made compost.

Thanks to our volunteers who helped us with this. And thanks also to Mahindra for supporting us with printed banners for this cleanliness drive.

BONUS! We also planted a peepal sapling at a nearby but a secret location!

WE MEAN TO CLEAN's Recommendations to Achieve a Swachh Bharat - I

India is one big nation. We are rich in cultural heritage. Over century we’ve developed, economically, especially the middle class. About 43% of population resides in urban areas, which were 11.4% according to 1901 census, 28.53% in the 2001 census and crossed 30% as per 2011 census, standing at 31.16%. There are 53 urban agglomerations in India with a population of 1 million or more as of 2011 against 35 in 2001. Our transcendence can be termed as “a consumerist culture”, where virtually every item purchased comes fixed in a box wrapped in a bubble sheet. In science, this fact reduces time of impact and absorbs the momentum after collision but in reality it is aggregating to an irreparable damage to environment. It is waste generation. India generates 62 million tonnes out of which 43 million Tonnes Per Annum is collected from source. What happens when many hands come together?

An exciting day for us. We never tried it before at this scale at such a location. But with a little help from everyone the day turned out to be outstanding! The place is Janakpuri District Center. It's a large shopping center in west Delhi. Home to various kinds of shops, eateries, restaurants and even offices. Also, a perpetual victim of civil negligence by those who have an establishment here or the visitors to these establishments. Yes, the place maintains consistency all-year round in terms of open garbage dumping. Before we even conducted this drive we spoke to a lot of shop owners to understand the problem. It was the same lamenting around people's attitude towards littering liberally... Forget littering, people found creative ways to dump their garbage - office letter boxes! Spotfix at CP

Date: 25-June-2016 No. of Volunteers: 29 Time: 2 Hours We were invited by India@75 team (a CII initiative) to participate in their cleanliness drive at CP. Our enthusiastic team of volunteers showed up in big numbers and removed paan-stains from pillars at inner circle in CP. We also painted them to restore their look. Our volunteers also spoke to some of the local vendors sitting around and big showrooms such as those of United Colors Of Benetton and Asian Paints and requested them all to help clean the surroundings clean. It'll only help their business after-all. WE MEAN TO CLEAN was also thrilled to be accompanied by Temsutula Imsong and Shailesh Pandey.
