Five Great Ways to Celebrate Eco-friendly Diwali

We Mean To Clean shares their ideas to celebrate Diwali in an eco-friendly yet enjoyable way!

It’s that time of the year again. The biggest festivals of all. A day to be with family. A day full of auspiciousness, togetherness and love. The most royal of all, the festival of lights… yes, Diwali. We all know how our air quality goes down on this night, especially in a city like Delhi, where air quality is already poor. So, here we are to offer you some suggestions to celebrate Diwali in an eco-friendly way! We hope you’ll like these ideas.

1. Avoid Firecrackers

This is a common one and it goes without saying. Firecrackers not only add to air pollution but they also cause sound pollution. High decibel sound is especially harmful for sensitive ears of infants and small children. And let’s also show some compassion to our pets and stray animals who live in our vicinity. And worse, they emit toxic fumes which are harmful for our health. Additionally, we all know the amount of waste it generates. We understand it could be your first Diwali in many ways. But then there are many more ways to make your first Diwali extra-special. Keep reading :)

2. Organic Rangoli

Did you know that rangoli was originally made to share our food and life with insects? Then why use artificial colours if it takes away the significance? So, let’s make your rangoli only with flowers, natural colours or turmeric. A rangoli made with flowers not only looks awesome (a perfect Facebook and Instagram pic!) but it also smells good adding positive vibes in our homes. And that’s what we want on this day, right?

You could involve a couple of family members to make a rangoli. And shoot shot video clips to keep as a great memory!

3. Earthenware Diyas

No expensive jazzy electrical lights system can beat the charm and piousness in an earthenware diya! The flame has its own positive aura that kills negative vibes around. So why use electric lights? They're artificial! And while you buy earthenware diyas you also ensure you're able to light-up an underprivileged family's home too! Isn't that the true spirit of a festival?

Lighting diyas with family members is great fun! And staying together also increases family bonding.

4. Handmade Gifts

Why not make your Diwali gift more personal by making it yourself? It can be customized to your dear one's personality and it'll be a cut above from the usual readymade gift items you get from your market, which are usually made from plastic or Paris. And none is good for the environment. So, why not tap into your creative potential and make this Diwali even more special?

5. Use Newspapers as Gift-wraps

Everybody wraps gifts in those shiny sheets or the other printed ones. Don't you wish your gift should stand out from the crowd? Use newspapers as gift wraps. Not only they'll look classy but you'll also be reusing your newspaper.

You can use comic strips sections for children's gifts and business newspapers for a corporate employee!

So, what do you think? Aren't these ideas brilliant? If you have any more suggestions, please feel free to write to us: info@wmtc.org.in

An Experience with Home Composting

Home-made Compost My Motivation There can be different motivating factors for composting your organic waste at home. Compost is an excellent source of nutrition for your plants and home composting ensures it is free of any added chemicals. However, I do not have many plants at the ground floor, where I live. So, my motivation was different. I wanted to start the practice of segregating our household waste into: Wet Waste including kitchen waste such as fruits and vegetable peels, leftover raw food etc. Dry Waste including plastic, paper, cardboard etc. Why Segregate? It is important to segregate our waste because doing so makes waste a resource. Wet waste can yield products like compost and dry waste can be recycled. In both cases we can reduce our contribution to our local dhalaos . These dhalaos become a breeding spot for flies and other insects that are harmful to our health. Further, segregating also ensures that your waste collector won’t have to put thei

Alarm Bells for Humanity Keep Ringing

A recent study published in the journal Nature Climate Change has revealed alarming predictions about the Earth's future. Despite countries' efforts to meet their current emissions targets, the study shows that the world is still on track to warm by 2.7 degrees Celsius. This projected temperature rise would far surpass the 1.5 degrees Celsius target set by scientists as the threshold to avoid the most severe consequences of climate change. The implications of exceeding the 1.5 degrees Celsius target are significant. Scientists warn that crossing this threshold could lead to catastrophic impacts on our planet. In order to prevent such a scenario, the study's authors emphasize the urgent need to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% before 2050. This ambitious goal requires immediate action and a comprehensive approach to combat climate change. The study's findings underscore the urgency and importance of taking immediate action to mitigate the impacts of climate

🌱🌳🌞 Bright and sunny morning at our native trees nursery! 🌱🌳🌞

We had an amazing meetup yesterday, surrounded by lush greenery and the delightful calls of peacocks and peahens. 🌿🦚 Our volunteers arrived from different directions, bringing their passion for the environment and their commitment to making a positive change. 🌍❤️ Together, we accomplished so much! Our nursery now houses a variety of beautiful tree species, including jamun, mango, amaltas, sheesham, and neem. 🌳🌿 Our volunteers went above and beyond. One of them brought a precious mango sapling, symbolizing growth, abundance, and sweet rewards. πŸ₯πŸŒ± Another volunteer surprised us with a peepal sapling, representing wisdom, resilience, and deep-rooted connection with nature. 🌳🌿 We're grateful for the enthusiasm and dedication shown by each volunteer.
