An exciting day for us. We never tried it before at this scale at such a location. But with a little help from everyone the day turned out to be outstanding!
The place is Janakpuri District Center. It's a large shopping center in west Delhi. Home to various kinds of shops, eateries, restaurants and even offices. Also, a perpetual victim of civil negligence by those who have an establishment here or the visitors to these establishments.
Yes, the place maintains consistency all-year round in terms of open garbage dumping. Before we even conducted this drive we spoke to a lot of shop owners to understand the problem. It was the same lamenting around people's attitude towards littering liberally... Forget littering, people found creative ways to dump their garbage - office letter boxes!
The other thing that came out of those discussions with the local shopkeepers was finger-pointing on civic authorities. Not that the place doesn't see any sweepers. We did spot one on the day of our drive. But in the absence of self-responsibility a sweeper's efforts are all but evanescent.
Citizens also have some responsibility. We have a responsibility. Those heaps of garbage were not only an eyesore to us but were breeding grounds of various kinds of diseases. So, something had to be done.
We roped in our friends at Soch Theatre Group to help us with a street play to create awareness on ill-effects of littering.
And post that we conducted our usual activity of cleanup on one portion of this shopping centre.
We were glad that those from the play audience and even from the other visitor-crowd came forward to help us.
Age didn't matter!
By the end of the entire exercise we filled a large number of garbage bags... All possible because of so many helping hands. We don't know how much we collected. But it's there for everyone to see!
